I was first exposed to the Star Rods lineup during my tenure with Merrick Tackle back in the early 90’s. At that time Merrick was the wholesale distributor in the region. I still remember my reaction the first time seeing and handling these rods. The quality was on par with any of the more expensive fishing rods I was familiar with but at a much lower cost.

Star Rods StellarLite Series Fishing Rods

I also quickly became aware that the lower price did not mean cheaper quality. These rods are built on IM-6 graphite blanks with top notch Fuji reel seats and guides. The guide wraps are all well done with no unsightly spaces and are all finished with a glassy smoothness you would expect from a custom built rod.

I target striped bass and bluefish with Star Rods on my boat by fishing large live-baits, drifting chunk baits in hard running currents, casting large wooden lures around inlet structures. In all cases my lineup of the larger Star Rods has met the challenges of conditions that are very hard on tackle. Scaling down to lighter tackle for inshore species the Star Rods shine again as bucktails and leadheads are cast to shallow water flats for summer flounder, weakfish, bluefish and smaller striped bass. The rods offer the sensitivity to feel the slightest strike and provide enough backbone to handle the pleasant surprise of a larger fish.

Since my initial exposure at Merrick I have amassed quite a few of these rods. I fish several different models from their StellarLite series and have found them to match up to any other manufacturer out there. The models  in my lineup include several each of 7ft, 7 1/2ft and 8ft spinning and casting rods.  These rods receive an extensive workout during my charter season and have never let me or my clients down.

While I have not had occasion to deal with the manufacturer personally, there are numerous reviews on the various boating and fishing website detailing happy customers who have had excellent experiences in dealing with the company.

In quality of components, construction, price range and fish-ability I truly believe these rods are the very best value out there, easily matching up with rods two or even three times the cost.
