NYS DEC Announces Recreational Marine Fishing Registry
Posted by: | CommentsThe New York State Dept of Environmental Conservation has announced the No-Fee Recreational Marine Fishing Registry is now available online and ready for NY saltwater anglers to register for FREE. This Registry was created to replace the recently repealed NY Saltwater License to keep New York in compliance with the Federal law requiring all Saltwater anglers to be registered.
To register visit the following link and go through the process, when you reach the point to add Licenses select the Marine Registry. It will come up as No Charge. Simply go through the rest of the prompts to complete the registration. DEC will mail your card.
If you have already gone through the DECALS website before your information will already be stored there. Just confirm all is correct, ESPECIALLY your mailing address.

Very easy process. I completed the entire thing in about 5 minutes. Or you could just fish from a Licensed Party or Charter Boat all the time and be covered!!

The Long Island Fishing Season Begins
Posted by: | CommentsThe weather could not be timed any better either as Sunday May 1st marks the opening day for the New York Fluke season. NY State Department of Environmental Conservation has finally announced the regulations on their website which are as follows;
3 fish per angler at 20.5 inches
Open Season of May 1 through September 30
There was much fanfare over the regulations for this season but that is behind us now, the regulations are official and the season is right around the corner. I hope everyone is able to get out there Sunday and have a great day on the water.
As for myself, I have plans for a preliminary peek around the Great South Bay and Fire Island Inlet area tonight hoping to find a few of the stripers and bluefish that are rumored to have already entered this area. I also have the crew rounded up for a more another attempt on Saturday afternoon.
Whether we have fish on these initial trips or not I know it will be GREAT just being back on the water. After the winter we had I will take solace in knowing if they are not around just yet then they are NOT far away

Long Island Fishing and Boating Season Beginnings
Posted by: | CommentsAs I have chronicled over on my Facebook Page the 2011 Spring commissioning has had some setbacks as I needed to wait for parts orders that were crossed up and some decent weather that would allow the bottom paint to be applied.
I can tell you that the New York weatherman does NOT own a boat. I am convinced of this fact with the weather we’ve had so far this Spring!! With that said, I was not going to allow him to throw another wrench into the works for the scheduled launch date.
I had the hauler, (Mike from MNL Marine) scheduled for 9am on Saturday morning. I awoke at 7:30am to give myself time to review the checklist making sure all equipment was aboard. It was POURING rain!!!! The phone rang at 8am. It was Mike calling to confirm I was still going. My words to him were “If he was good to go then I was”. Mike told me he’d be there on time
Mike arrived 9am on the dot. The rain welcomed him by starting to come down even harder. He had the boat on the trailer in no time at all and with that we were off the the ramp. We were greeted at the ramp with SE winds around 20kts blowing the rain sideways.
Backed the Maybe Tonight down the ramp and drove her off the trailer for the trip to her residence for the next 7 or so months at Seaborn Marina in Bay Shore. Even with the nasty weather it was a GREAT feeling to be back on the Great South Bay after a long winter.
The New York Fluke fishing season kicks off on 5/1 and the Maybe Tonight will be ready to go. If you would like to fish take a peek at the Charters page for details.
I hope everyone has a great and SAFE season this year.

New York Striped Bass Season Opens Today!!
Posted by: | CommentsApril 15th is a date that is very dear to Long Island saltwater anglers. This date signifies the opening of the Marine District Striped Bass season!! Long Island endured a very tough winter this year with a seemingly endless line of snowstorms one after another over the stretch to two months. While the fishing is generally still slow at this time of year, the striped bass season opening day, for me personally, has always brought promise of a Spring season loaded with big stripers.
In the Fire Island area I fish the reality is that the vast majority of the fish caught this time of year are under the 28inch size limit. That doesn’t matter. The knowledge that it is STRIPER season and not the HOLIDAY season is good enough for me.
So, to all my fellow striped bass fanatics, I wish you a very good 2011 striped bass season and hope you find the COW of a lifetime this year. See you out there!!!!

And The Winner Is….
Posted by: | CommentsBefore I announce the winner I want to thank EVERYONE who submitted their photos for this giveaway. I asked for some great shots to help take my mind off the nasty winter we are having here on Long Island and you guys came through big-time!! Thank YOU very much, I have enjoyed seeing your pictures. I think this may have helped cure Winter as well since it hasn’t snowed in two weeks and we actually hit 53 degrees here today. BONUS!!!
And now I have happy to announce that the Winner of the 2011 Winter STINKS Giveaway is William Ragulsky. William’s winning shot came to me directly from the Concrete Ships off Virginia’s Eastern Shore area. You can read the entire story on William’s blog at Coastal Kayak Angler. Action photos were asked for and I think William’s has that pretty much covered. Click the pic for larger size.
I will reach out to William for shipping details. If there is no word after 7 days I will pick a new winner next Monday.
Congratulations to William on a BEAUTIFUL fish (Caught atop a kayak to boot) and I hope you catch a better one on your new Super Strike popper.
And to everyone who participated, once again I thank you for taking the time to send in your pictures.

The 2011 Winter STINKS Giveaway
Posted by: | CommentsAfter much thought on the subject I have come to the conclusion that winter STINKS! This comes following the cleanup of the latest foot of snow dumped on my driveway as the result of the 7th snowstorm to bury us since the day after Christmas. Now I realize that there are parts of the country where this stuff is a way of life but not here on Long Island. You can be sure that we have had some huge blizzards across the area over the years but the past does not compare with the winter of 2011 to date. Backaches and overall soreness are the order of the day this year and I am beginning to feel as though I should be attending the shareholders meetings for Tylenol corporation.
I’ve decided that I need a fix of something fishing related. With that said I am happy to announce another lure giveaway. The 2011 Winter Stinks Giveaway is offering another of my favorite top-water lures, the Super Strike Little Neck popper. This little beauty is deadly on striped bass and bluefish populations. The plug is made of high impact plastic and features through-wired hook holders to stand up to the beating these fish can put on a lure.
To take your shot at this lure post your very best fishing action photograph. Let’s see some bent rods and anglers straining against a fish screaming the drag off. Basically, let’s see you HOOKED UP!!! Bluegill or bluefish, it does not matter. A little detail on the picture would also be nice but definately not required
As with my previous giveaways, there is nothing hidden here, no strings attached or obligations. You post your HOOKED UP submissions and a I will pick a winner from them. Plain and simple, that’s all there is. The winner gets the plug and the others can take solace in the fact that they helped the Captain to temporarily forget about the nasty old winter.
This will be open for submissions until February 14th at which time a winner will be announced here on the site.
If this sounds good then let’s see ‘em!!!!
