My buddy Dennis and I fished in the Harbor Crab Striped Bass contest for the first time this year and had a GREAT time. Harbor Crab is a local waterfront restaurant in Patchogue NY and they run this contest every year to benefit a local High School scholarship.

Contest rules called for lines in at 6am and we were on scene and ready. At our first stop I marked tons of baitfish on the bottom with birds diving chasing bait being pushed to the surface. We dropped diamond jigs to the bottom and they were hit immediately but not by what we were looking for. Instead it turned out to be large numbers of very small weakfish in the 12-14 inch size range.

Moving out to deeper water we found the bunker schools and started working them over. Had nice action with striped bass but the best one we found only pulled the scale at the contest weigh-in down to 25.2 lbs. Good enough for 4th place which is basically the 3rd place loser.

The buffet at the after party was top notch and they had a bunch of good looking raffle prizes as well. We had a nice time and great day on the water
