I had the chance to take a drive down to Robert Moses State Park this morning to take a peek at what was going on with the dredging projects in the Fire Island Inlet and Great South Bay areas. Word has it the project that was working the Fire Island Inlet all Winter has wrapped up for the year and this appeared to be the case as the big dredge was gone and all that remained was some of the support vessels and equipment up against South Beach on the back of Robert Moses State Park.

However, another dredging operation kicked off just this past week that is pumping sand from the State Boat Channel across the bay onto the beach front at Moses park. The dredge itself is working the shoal area of the State Channel just to the West of the drawbridge. The pipeline runs from the dredge south, under the Ocean Parkway on-ramp and enters the water a few hundred yards West of the Robert Moses Bridge and continuing south before exiting at the Park Ranger and Marina complex on the south side of the bay.

For the northern half of the pipeline’s run it appeared to be well marked with white cans indicating it’s position below the surface. These markers continue out to the center of the bridge span where a narrow buoyed opening, approximately 100yds wide, indicates the safe passage across the pipeline. However, the southern half, from the center of the bridge to the exit point at the Moses Marina did not appear to have any markers on it whatsoever. Considering this is a very popular drift for the fluke fishermen in the area this is definitely something to watch out for. While I was driving across the bridge by myself I would guesstimate the pipeline to be just a few hundred yards west of the Robert Moses bridge span about halfway between the bridge and the 15  / 16 buoy pair.

While I personally have not been able to learn of the completion dates I have read a few posts online that have this dredge operation running through most of the Spring and some have even gone as far as to say it would be operating until August 1. If I am able to learn of proposed completion dates I will update here or on my Facebook page with that information.
