The fluke fishing on the Great South Bay this summer has been some of the best I can recall. The number of keepers ( with many BIG keepers) is like nothing I can recall. I had the opportunity to fish a solo trip on Sunday morning and had a wonderful trip with the Banta family today.

On Sunday I was out before daybreak with the idea being to do some prospecting for my beloved weakfish. We are getting close to that time of year where the summer fish start to stir around. Alas, it didn’t happen this day so I turned my attention to the flatties. As has been the case, one fish after another on just about any pieced I fished.  A couple of keepers mixed in that were released to become future doormats!!

Today I had the Banta family out of Saltaire aboard, a full 6-pack today, and from the very first drift it was a bail job!! The gang was hooking up almost faster than I could keep up with, many times two or three at a time. The boys were keeping a very close count for everyone so they could see who had the bragging rights for the day. Well, to sum it up, at the end of the day I was told they counted 110 fluke came aboard the boat with Kyle taking the High Hook award with 32.

Great Fluking in the Fire Island area

A very good amount of these fish were very near the NY legal size limit and the gang did manage a couple of  keepers for their planned BBQ as well. What a great day on the water with a wonderful group. Thank you very much folks and will see you guys again next Summer.
