Fire Island Fishing Report- Ocean Bunker Pods
ByI had Mike B aboard along with his two children, Nolan and Gennah, on Saturday morning for a trip chasing striped bass among the schools of bunker in the ocean. Slipped out of the marina at 6am and across the Great South Bay in the calmest conditions we have had yet so far this year.
The ocean was pancake flat as well and it was obvious right away that the bunker schools were everywhere just outside the Fire Island Inlet buoy.
We worked over the schools for a while, snagging and swimming them for striped bass and some bluefish bite-offs before heading inside to drift some pieces in the bay. Well, the bluefish had the feedbags on as each live bunker that was put down was almost immediately cut in half by them. It seemed the blues were on the baits so quickly that any stripers in the area would not get a chance to see them.
We finished up the day back outside on the schools but had no further luck. It was a beautiful day on the water with wonderful company. Thank you guys!!!
