This is a California Delta Striper. There are not enough big West Coast Stripers like their East Coast Cousins, but at least I still get to fish for my old favorite… Sure miss them COWS!

Captain Paul. There are more 50 pound Stripers caught in New England in 1 year than than there are in California in 10 years.

At Lake San Antonio in the central coast region of California, I was pursuing Small Mouth Bass with a 3.5″ clear with sparkle straight tail finesse worm on a drop shot rig tied to 6 pound test with a 20 inch fluorocarbon leader on a small swivel. The hook was 11 inches above the 1/8oz weight. I saw a small serial at the shoreline edge and quickly pitched next to it and this striper immediately grabbed it like a ton of bricks. It ran off with about 200 yards of line , Then 50 yds,and then 150 yds. My 6 lb spinning outfit was clearly over matched but every thing held together and I managed to slip a net under him. it was an epic battle! 8.14 on handheld scale, not huge fish but a huge experience. The kind that memories are made of.

  13. Capt Paul says:

Rich, that is a GREAT fish on a 6lb spinning outfit!! Nice job and thank you for sharing your experience here!!!

    Tight lines……
